Dry needling stimulates a trigger point (or the tension knot) in a skeletal muscle. A tight band of skeletal muscle may cause aching and heaviness in other areas of your body. A twitch can occur when the needle goes into the trigger point and shows that the therapy is working. Dry needling is different from acupuncture. Therapeutic dry needling is based on Western medicine and focuses on treating muscle problems. Acupuncture is based on Chinese medicine and focuses on balancing the flow of energy in the body.
